I Won’t Kneel [2020]
SYNOPSIS“I grew-up questioning my authenticity as a Japadhola girl because I just couldn’t bring myself to kneel down while greeting other people like many other Japadhola girls did, like I had been taught. It just disturbed me that none of the boys were expected to kneel down for anything. A number of cultures within Uganda require women to kneel down while greeting other members of the society. They say that it is a sign of respect. The Japadhola, a small community of people located in Tororo -Eastern Uganda strongly believe in this culture. I still question my authenticity, Am I the bad girl? In this documentary I travel to my village in search of answers to questions that have always taunted me in regard to this tradition.”
