I Am Samuel [2013]

SYNOPSIS

Samuel’s family lives in the rural Kenyan countryside where the church is strong and the emphasis is on family. Samuel is close to his mother but his father, a preacher at the local church, is perplexed why his son is not yet married. Samuel lives in the slums of Nairobi with his boyfriend Alex, whom he brings home with him hoping that his family will accept him for who he is and not force him to live a lie. In the countryside, they cannot even suggest that they are more than friends. In Nairobi, Sammy and Alex are victims of prejudice, ridicule and violence and can only be open with their closest friends in the privacy of their homes. In Kenya intimacy between two men is a crime punishable with 14 years in jail for those found guilty.
