The River Short Documentary Film 2026
SYNOPSIS
In the heart of Nairobi flows the Mathare River once a symbol of life, now a site of neglect, pollution, and
environmental injustice. The River is a striking documentary that exposes the devastating impact of urban waste,
illegal dumping, and human disregard on one of Nairobi’s most critical waterways.
At the center of the story is the Lucky Summer Environmental Waste Management Organization (LEWMO) a
grassroots group working tirelessly to restore the Mathare River and educate surrounding communities on the
urgent need for proper waste management and environmental care. Through their clean-up drives, advocacy,
and youth mobilization, LEWMO becomes both a shield and a voice for the river.
Shot against the backdrop of Nairobi’s urban chaos, The River interweaves community stories, visual evidence
of environmental decay, and the hope ignited by local activism. The film challenges viewers to rethink their
relationship with nature, responsibility, and resilience in the face of environmental collapse.
This is not just the story of a polluted river. It is the story of people who refuse to give up on it.
